The Most Popular Article of Clothing of All-Time
There's nothing better than having a friendly debate with
a friend over a topic you both enjoy tremendously. For
sports fans it's, "Who was the greatest baseball
hitter ever"? For music lovers it's, "What was
the greatest band ever"?
Like those other interests, for clothing styles and fashion
lovers there are a number of queries that can be contended.
Who is the greatest fashion designer in the world today?
Who is the greatest designer ever? Perhaps it's a more
frivolous question such as, "What was the ugliest
fashion trend to be hugely popular"?
At fashionsplazza.com we thought we would table this question:
What is the most popular and universal specific article
of clothing to come along in history?
One could argue a more generalized concept that the "dress"
has basically been around since cavewomen starting covering
themselves. They could suggest that whether a woman wears
a Western gown, a burka, an old Roman toga wrap, a Native
American dress, etc, she is essentially wearing the article
of clothing that equates to a "dress". Therefore,
that is the most popular, universal, and long-lasting
item of clothing in history.
With that oversimplified approach, one could make a similar
argument for the "shirt". Or footwear, in general.
But we're talking about a more specific article of clothing.
Perhaps a more specialized niche of footwear such as the
cowboy boot. Or a more specific style of dress such as
the poodle skirt, the mini-skirt, or the leather skirt.
A lengthy and very entertaining debate here at fashionsplazza.com
came to the final agreement that the most universal, popular,
has-withstood-the-test-of-time article of clothing is
.blue
jeans !!
A quick history:
Some people think jeans have only been around since the
1950s when teenagers popularized the casual style of school
dress that thrives today. Others believe that blue jeans
were invented in the United States during the California
Gold Rush of the 1850s by Levi Strauss. To an extent,
that is true. The style of blue jeans that Americans are
familiar with today and has spanned generations in the
US did emerge from that historical event. But earlier
styles of what qualify as jeans and their true origin
go much farther back.
The word "jeans" comes from the French phrase
bleu de Genes, literally the blue of Geno. Jeans fabric,
or denim, originated independently in two places: the
French town of Nimes, which 'denim' owes its name to;
and in India, where trousers made of denim material were
worn by the sailors of Dhunga, which came to be known
as dungarees.
At around the same time, denim trousers were made in Chieri,
a town near Turin (Italy), during the Renaissance, and
were popularized in the 16th century.
A dry-goods merchant Levi Strauss was selling blue jeans
under the "Levi's" name to the mining communities
of California in the 1850s.
After James Dean popularized them in the movie, Rebel
Without A Cause, wearing blue jeans by teenagers and young
adults became a symbol of youth rebellion during the 1950s.
Because of this, they were sometimes banned in theaters,
restaurants and schools.
During the 1960s the wearing of blue jeans became more
acceptable. By the 1970s had become a general fashion
in the United States, at least for informal wear.
Acceptance of jeans continued through the 1980s and 1990s
to the point where jeans are now a wardrobe staple, with
the average North American owning seven pairs.
That last statement is what helped us to determine blue
jeans as the winner. Many women only own a few dresses-perhaps
due to economics. Many men only own and wear one hat.
Many more do not wear a hat at all. While many women love
shoes and own several pair, many other women own only
a few---again due to economics.
But the average North American owns seven pairs of blue
jeans. That blew our editorial room away.
People have been wearing one style of jeans or another
for over 350 years. In the US, they have been a popular
form of pants for over 150 years. They have been a staple
of dress for over 50 years worldwide.
They're your favorite pair of faded, beat-up, blue jeans.
And they're here to stay !
